Spectral analysis is a reflective sensing technique that uses reflected sunlight to illuminate and measure reflective & absorptive indices. Humans see in three visible bands, red, green and blue. We use these to see our world in colour and distinguish between features, by the colours our eyes detect. Hyperspectral systems used at Texo DSI can detect a plethora of spectrums allowing for observation of up to 270 spectral bands.
Many applications exist with key soil nutrient quantification, disease detection and chemical composition of plants in agriculture. By combining this data with our LiDAR system we can create interactive digital point clouds of this information.

Client Requirement
Located at the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, stands St Catherines Lighthouse. This beautiful Victorian structure built in 1838, the first lighthouse in the world to be powered by electricity, requires carefully planned upgrade’s and design.Texo DSI were contracted to create a fully geo-referenced 3D point cloud of the site to include
lighthouse and out-buildings, both internally and externally. From this data Texo DSI also produced precise floor plans and elevation drawings. Our client also required an accurate cliff face profile, through the dense vegetation.
The Solution
Using our expertise in advanced survey methods
we combined multiple survey datasets to deliver a
high accuracy (+/-5mm) model. Through traditional
survey we established ground control across the site
to orientate the survey to OS and using our advanced
fleet of UAV’s, we employed multiple survey sensors
on a fixed wing and multi-rotor platform to capture
all the external site detail.
By collecting inspection quality imagery in collaboration with ground-based traditional survey methods we ensured our 3D model is of the highest quality and accuracy. The dense vegetation on the cliff face would normally cause an issue however the use of our world leading LiDAR system was chosen because it has the ability to penetrate vegetation resulting in the ability to model the true cliff face.
Our Conclusion
We Delivered
Combination of the datasets has produced a stunning full colour point cloud model of the listed structure and its environment – ‘3D Digital Twin’. With the advanced ability to digitally interrogate this ancient structure on our client portal ‘Texzone’, this has opened a whole new world of design capabilities to our client.
FULL COLOUR 3D POINT CLOUD
TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY
DIGITAL FLOOR PLANS & ELEVATIONS
Client Requirement
Our client needed a survey of five cliff sites on the south coast to get an accurate picture of the current state of the cliff face and surrounding terrain. Given the lack of access, densely vegetated cliff facades and the inability of traditional survey sensors to collected enough useful
data our brief was to provide a UAV LiDAR point cloud that could enable the client to digitalise the cliff face, enabling generation of a digital terrain model and high accuracy measurements to be taken, allowing them to make important ecological and public safety decisions.
The Solution
We carried out all the work using our industry leading UAV LiDAR system to accurately scan the cliff face and produce a 3D point cloud of the site. By employing advanced LiDAR Classification, we removed the vegetated layer and provided our client with a ground only model, a true digital representation of the terrain. This data was sent for analysis by the client’s appointed geotechnics consultant.
Establishment of high accuracy ground control across
the site ensured that both our LiDAR survey, 3D point cloud of Castle & our Photogrammetry data were accurately geo referenced, allowing seamless integration of datasets across multiple software packages.
Our Conclusion
We Delivered
The LiDAR data and associated GPS information were post-processed in house at Texo DSI using our advanced procedures to give a point cloud accuracy of sub 5mm. As requested by the client, the digital vegetation layer was removed to provide a bare earth model for the geologists to work with.
All data was hosted on our client portal ‘Texzone’ where the client was able to interact and interrogate the dataset without the need for expensive third-party software.

Condemned BVLOS Building Inspection In The Presence
Of Asbestos Contamination
Internal UAV Inspection
Client Requirement
Our client needed to deliver a structural report on a four-story heritage building that had been deemed unsafe for human entry due to asbestos contamination, collapsed floors and structurally unsound walls and roof. The team was tasked with assessing if the building could be repurposed and if a temporary buttress scaffold was needed to potentially prevent a collapse onto a busy public
street opposite a major rail station. Our client needed to know the exact condition of the internal structure to identify any potential areas of collapse and instability. Due to the nature of the building, engineers could not provide a method of surveying the building that did not run into the £100,000 region or put personnel into extremely hazardous environments.
The Solution
We were chosen because of our expertise in internal Beyond Visual Line of Site operations (BVLOS). We used a class-leading system offering a dual visual and thermal sensor payload, paired with super bright LED lighting to allow for the safe operation in hazardous confined unlit spaces. To prevent damage to the UAV system and its surroundings, we used a carbon fibre anti-collision encapsulation system allowing the system to come into direct contact with surfaces to maximise data quality,
whilst ensuring no damage is sustained to either the asset or the system. An encapsulation chamber was erected to isolate the building from the external environment and provide a contained environment. A signal relay was placed into the building to ensure full signal to the UAV system was obtained. From here flights were launched to progressively explore the building and build the engineers’ understanding of the internal conditions.
Our Conclusion
We Delivered
Using this technique 95% of the rooms were inspected, fully detailing the condition of all supporting walls and exposed roof beams. The remaining two were missed due to collapses blocking access. The on-site engineers and inspectors were able to gather all the required information for their condition reports from the data provided by Texo DSI with no exposure of any personnel or public member to the contaminated areas or atmosphere.

DETAILED INSPECTION REPORT
HOSTING ON INTERACTIVE DATA PORTAL ‘TEXZONE’
Client Requirement
The University was working with a specialist architectural firm to assess the exterior condition of one of its colleges, a grade 1 listed building, which was founded in the 14th century. These would normally be manually assessed,
but the position of the buildings, the listed nature and the fact they were in a highly congested part of the city, made manual inspection unsafe and cost prohibitive, so an alternative was needed.
The Solution
We were asked to help with the structures – a dormitory building and the Gate of Virtue – one of the three main gates at the college. For the dormitory building, we used a drone to take an entire photogrammetry run of the roof section – something that is often missed by most traditional survey companies because it is too high for pole-cameras. We then did a traditional laser-scan survey at the base of the building to give us control data so that
the project outcome was as accurate as possible and fit for its end purpose, heritage documentation and re-design. Utilisation of our unique 5m safety case and working at height trained personnel enabled Texo to conduct the data capture safely of around 3,500 images combined with traditional survey dimensional control and laser scanning gave us the data to create a highly textured, 3D model accurate to +/-10mm.
Our Conclusion
We Delivered
The laser scans were used to create a 3D model each building, with the UAV imagery collected Orthomosaic technology was used to render the model to the allow the client to zoom-in on the tiniest detail – something that is ideal for detailed inspection reports and making a case for alterations or repairs to a Heritage building. Using the client portal ‘Texzone’ the client carried out a condition report and referenced the high detail imagery we collected to tags directly on the 3D model, something which has revolutionised our client’s in-house procedures for condition reporting.

Client Requirement
The client needed to inspect the fire protection installed on the wall between various facilities. Over the year holes had been made between areas to accommodate cable tray, pipes and process equipment. Many of the areas were
located at height of up to 15m and above highly sensitive and hazardous equipment. The team also needed a way of referencing the information from the visual inspection to specific locations and validate the size of some of the holes.
The Solution
We used our internal confined space UAV system, which offers a dual visual and thermal sensor payload, paired with super bright LED lighting for safe operation in hazardous confined unlit spaces. We also used a carbon fibre anti-collision encapsulation system, allowing the system to come into direct contact with surfaces to maximise data quality, whilst ensuring no damage was sustained to either the site or our system.
For additional detail, we used an internal Structured Light mapping system to collect highly detailed point cloud data from the walls to allow for accurate CAD sections that measured the holes/defects and provided reference for the visual data collected.
Our Conclusion
Deploying highly trained operatives, Texo managed to capture all the necessary data far more efficiently than the URENCO team prepared for, leading to the generation of highly detailed and accurate reports which allowed for effective remediation planning of the degraded fire prevention fabric. This prevented spiralling costs in scaffolding and the associated hazards and risks that personnel may be exposed to, as well as massive increases in efficiency and data quality compared to previous methods.
